The Yusuf Trilogy
| The acclaimed Yusuf trilogy heralds Semih Kaplanoglu as the most significant auteur from Turkey since Nuri Bilge Ceylan. He accomplished a rare feat by having all three of the films in the world’s most prestigious festivals: Egg in Cannes Director’s Fortnight, Milk in Venice Competition, and Honey in Berlin Competition, where it won the top prize. The trilogy recounts the life of Yusuf, a poet, starting from when he is middle-aged in Egg to him as a child in Honey. With no music and minimal dialogue, the director illustrates the inner world of one man – the “origins of the soul.” |

Yamada Yoji in 21st Century
| Revered Japanese master Yamada Yoji, now 79 years old, is as tireless as ever. His popularity in the last decade, especially overseas, has arguably eclipsed the years when his long-running Tora-san series became a household name. Moreover, he began experimenting more with genres, starting with his first forays into samurai epics as well as co-directing a film with documentary elements. We are proud to present four recent films as proofs of Yamada Yoji’s modern renaissance. |

3 Gems from the 80’s – New Prints from Kawakita
| Named after the late film curator Kashiko Kawakita, the Kawakita Memorial Film Institute has been collecting prints of Japanese classics and organizing retrospectives since 1982. Thanks to the institute, we are able to obtain brand new prints of these three seminal 1980s works by three influential directors. All three films explore the themes of social changes, whether it be through gender, modernization or nostalgic homage, while showcasing the inventiveness of Japanese cinema during that time. |
